About My Cancer

I was diagnosed in January 2004 with ductal & lobular breast cancer. It came as a shock to the whole family as I had no family history of breast cancer. This type of cancer was not seen on any of my mammograms. Feeling like something wasn't right, I kept in contact with my doctor. After 3 mammograms, the doctor ordered an ultrasound. That is how my cancer was found. The mass was over 5 cm and my surgeon recommended a mastectomy. I did some serious thinking and decided to have both breasts removed, as my type of cancer has a higher chance of coming back in the other breast.

I had my surgery in February 2004. Very difficult time in our lives. My family was a huge part of my recovery. My in-laws stayed at our house for over 3 weeks, doing the cooking, cleaning and taking care of our dogs. I couldn't have done it without them.

When I recovered enough to go shopping, my husband and I went shopping for wigs as chemo was to start in March. We found one that we liked and I also went for a haircut. Knowing I would lose my hair, I figured it would be easier to lose if it was shorter.

Chemo was really tough. I had 1 round of chemo every 3 weeks for 6 months. I started loosing my hair and decided it would be easier if we shaved it. Very emotional time. My son also shaved his head, so I wouldn't feel bad. What a great son!!!

I finished chemo in August 2004 and started radiation in September through the middle of October. It has been a long road, but I am now cancer free and feeling great.

I have hair again!!!!!
